Understanding self-consumption

Your solar electricity in 3 steps

The goal is not to produce as much as possible, but to use as much as possible of what you produce.

  1. Produce

The panels turn sunlight into electricity, mainly between 10 am and 5 pm. The output is chosen from your roof and your consumption, not from a standard package.

  2. Use it at the right time

Water heater, pool, washing machine, air conditioning or car charging run first when the panels are producing. An energy manager can control them automatically.

  3. Make the most of the surplus

Electricity you do not use can be set aside in a virtual battery and given back later, stored in a physical battery, or sold, although the buy-back tariff is now low. Each option has a different cost and benefit: we compare them with you.

At night, in winter and on cloudy days, you will still buy electricity: a well-designed installation greatly reduces these purchases without eliminating them. Read our guide: produce, manage, store

Self-assessment

Is solar worthwhile for you?

Four simple questions tell you whether your project deserves a study. If you answer yes to most of them, the solar pre-study will tell you in 2 minutes whether your roof is suitable for an installation.

Check my roof

  • A well-exposed roofFacing south, south-east or south-west (east-west is possible), with little shade between 10 am and 5 pm: trees, chimneys, neighbouring buildings.
  • A roof in good conditionTiles or a frame that need work should be repaired before installation: removing panels later is expensive.
  • Daytime consumptionHome working, retirement, pool, air conditioning, electric water heater, electric car: the more you use during the day, the more useful solar is.
  • A long-term projectYou plan to stay in the home for several years: an installation is considered over 20 to 30 years.

How a project actually works: at a first free appointment with no obligation, your Agence IntExt adviser studies your situation and presents the quote, then the QualiPV-certified partner installer takes over for the check visit, formalities, installation and after-sales service.

  1. Day 1The request and the appointment

Claire fills in the solar pre-study in two minutes and agrees to be called back. She receives a confirmation email: without her click, nobody calls her. The adviser calls her back to arrange an appointment at home.

  2. Week 1The full on-site study, free and with no obligation

The Agence IntExt adviser visits Claire and Thomas, in their presence. During this appointment:

    • he analyses the bills and the Linky consumption curve, hour by hour;
    • he checks the roof, the frame, shading, the consumer unit and the inverter location;
    • he compares three options with them: selling the surplus, a physical battery, a virtual battery, with their limits;
    • he presents the detailed quote from the QualiPV-certified partner installer: brands, models, output, formalities included, guarantees and ten-year insurance.
  3. Week 2Time to decide

Claire and Thomas could have signed at the appointment; they preferred to take a few days to think before accepting the quote. Once they have agreed, they have the legal 14-day withdrawal period.

  4. After the withdrawal periodThe partner installer’s check visit

The partner installer visits the site in turn to confirm all the technical points before starting the formalities.

  5. Month 2Formalities and any financial aid

Prior declaration at the town hall, grid connection request to Enedis, any financial aid and, if needed, a financing application. If any of these approvals is refused, the project is cancelled.

  6. Months 2 to 3Installation, checks and after-sales service

Once all approvals have been obtained, the installation is scheduled with the family and completed in two days. Then come the electrical compliance certificate (Consuel), commissioning, activation of the virtual battery and setting up the monitoring app. The partner installer then provides after-sales service under its own guarantees and those of the manufacturers.

What the study showed

  • 6 kWp12 panels of 500 Wp, facing due south
  • ≈ 8,820 kWhestimated output per year
  • ≈ 49%of the output used directly, thanks to the water heater control
  • ≈ 4,500 kWhof surplus per year, credited to the virtual battery and given back in the evening and in winter

What the family chose: self-consumption with a virtual battery, and an energy manager that heats the water during production hours. The surplus is not sold cheaply: it is set aside to be used later.

What was not chosen: selling the surplus, which is of little interest at the current buy-back tariff, and a physical battery, considered too expensive for this household at this stage. The installation can take one later.

Good to know: the virtual battery works with a monthly subscription and charges on the electricity given back, and the family remains connected to the grid. This was explained in writing from the first study.

3 warning signs to know

Solar power has suffered from unscrupulous practices. These three signs should make you think, whoever you are dealing with.

  1. A promise of total self-sufficiency or a “zero bill”

At night and in winter, you will stay connected to the grid. A serious study explains this from the start.

  2. A quote without a visit or a study of your consumption

Without Linky readings or a look at the roof, the proposed output is necessarily approximate.

  3. An installer you cannot find or who is not qualified

Check the QualiPV qualification, the ten-year insurance and the company on www.pappers.fr or www.societe.com.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions about solar

How long does it take to install solar panels?

The installation itself usually takes one to two days. Allow two to three months in total for the approvals (town hall, Enedis grid connection) and then the Consuel compliance certificate.

How does a virtual battery work?

The surplus produced during the day is recorded, then given back in the evening or in winter. It works with a monthly subscription and charges on the electricity given back: we compare its benefit with you, based on your consumption.

Do I need permission to install panels?

Yes, usually a prior declaration at the town hall, with stricter rules near a listed monument or in a condominium. The formalities are included in the quote.

My roof does not face due south: is it still possible?

Yes. A roof facing south-east, south-west, east or west produces less than a south-facing roof, but is often still worthwhile. The study estimates the expected output on your roof.

What happens if something breaks down?

The partner installer provides after-sales service and its guarantees; the manufacturers guarantee the panels and the inverter. The monitoring app makes it easy to spot a drop in output quickly.
