How can I tell if my roof is suitable for solar panels?

Updated on

Orientation, pitch, shading, condition of the covering, planning rules: the five points to check before considering a solar installation.

Not all roofs are equal when it comes to hosting solar panels. Before even talking about equipment, a few simple checks tell you whether your project deserves a detailed study.

1. Roof orientation

A south-facing roof generally gives the highest output over the year. East and west orientations are often still worthwhile: output is spread through the day, which can better match morning and late-afternoon consumption. A north-facing roof is rarely relevant.

2. Pitch

Tile roofs in the Var and Alpes-Maritimes generally have a moderate pitch, compatible with good output. On a flat roof, panels can be placed on tilted supports, subject to the roof’s strength and planning rules.

3. Shading

This is often the most underestimated criterion. A tree, chimney, neighbouring building or relief can noticeably reduce output, especially if they shade the panels during the sunniest hours. Observe your roof at different times of day and, if possible, in different seasons: the sun is lower in winter.

4. Condition of the covering and roof frame

A solar installation is designed to last a long time. If your roof needs redoing in the next few years, it is often better to deal with the covering before installation. The frame must also be able to carry the weight of the panels and their fixings.

5. Planning and condominium rules

A prior declaration of works at the town hall is generally necessary. Near a historic monument or in a protected area, the opinion of the Architecte des Bâtiments de France may be required. In a condominium, the owners’ meeting’s agreement is often essential.

And your consumption?

A well-exposed roof is not enough: the value of a self-consumption installation also depends on the share of electricity you use during the day. Air conditioning, a pool, home working or an electric vehicle are all uses that coincide with solar output.

Frequently asked questions

Can I check my roof’s orientation myself?

Yes, with a compass or an online aerial view. The on-site study then measures orientation, pitch and shading precisely.

Can panels be fitted on old tiles?

It depends on their condition. Fragile or porous tiles may need partial replacement or prior repair.
